What Do The Numbers on Tires Mean?

Mechanic looking at car tires at the repair garage

Chances are, whenever you’ve tried to order new tires or simply checked your tires closely, you’ve probably noticed the combination of numbers and letters on the sidewalls. We can’t all be ready to crack the enigma code at any time, so what do tire numbers mean? That string of numbers and letters tell us the tire’s size and type, as well as its performance usage. Are you wondering which will fit you for your Westlake commutes and adventures? Read on with Covert Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, then search our parts department for all your accessories and replacement needs.

Deciphering Your Tire Number Meaning

The codes on your tires can be incredibly specific, which is why they can be so hard to decode.  These numbers and letters alert your Round Rock service center or you the load index, speed rating, tire size, and the type of tire your vehicle requires to get the most out of its powertrain and other systems. For example:

P215/65R15 95H

In this case, what looks like a random series of numbers for manufacturers only, these actually describe the important details you need to know to stay performing your best on any Leander streets. Let’s start with the first set:

  • P stands for “P-Metric tire,” meaning that it is used for passenger vehicles.
  • You may also see an LT, which stands for “light truck”
  • No letter preceding the code means European style tire, or Euro-Metric tire, which have different load capacities.

Following the “P” is the “215” number, which indicates the number of millimeters of tire width from sidewall to sidewall. Here, it’s 215 millimeters.

The aspect ratio code, indicated in our example with “65,” follows the forward slash. A tire’s ratio is the result of dividing the height of the tire’s cross-section by its width. In our example, this tire has an aspect ratio with its height equal to 65% of the tire’s width. Larger sidewalls mean you likely have a larger aspect ratio.

The next letter, in this case, “R,” indicates the tire’s construction. In our example, this means that it’s a radial tire.

Thereafter, the number indicates the wheel size from one end to another in inches. “15” means this tire is meant for a 15-inch wheel.

At the very end in our case is “95H.” This is the load index (95) and speed rating (H) together. The load index indicates how much weight the tire can support when properly inflated. It can range from 75-105 for passenger vehicles. “H” represents the speed rating, which is how fast the tire can safely go based on its load capacity. This rating is ranked from A-Z, and with our example, a tire with an “H” rating can reach a maximum speed of 130 mph.
